I'm trying to decide whether to upgrade to the X1900XT when I order up my MacPro. I don't play games or do anything with FCP/Motion/etc... But I'm worried that driving a 30" might really require the x1900 XT. Anyone using the 30" + 7300 combo?

(BTW I know they work together, but that doesn't mean they work "well" together)

I would go for it. CoreImage/Video (which the OS uses) will like it and it will benefit you since your on a 30". Also the price of the X1900 just dropped to $300 for BTO.

well, what are you using it for? If it's really nothing video card-related, you can save $250 and have the computer in hand ~2 weeks earlier by going with the 7300. I've used a Mac Pro with the 7300 and a 30" ACD hooked up and it ran just fine for what I did (opened a bunch of applications, went to apple.com and loaded up 4 1080p H.264 trailers). You would definitely be disappointed if you tried running games or Motion on there at that res, but anything Adobe or Apple related (With the exception of Motion and Aperture to a lesser extent) should be fine.

I've got the stock Mac Pro 2.66GHz with the 7300 and the 30" display and it's just fine. I use it for Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Office and Aperture. I also Bootcamp into Windows to play games and so far it's OK playing games like the SIMS2 and Rise of Legends (just avoid the 2560 x 1600 in-game resolution setting- it crawls, but the next lowest resolution is fine).
