Just tried writing a 5.1gb file to a dual layer DVD. System profiler says my Sony 710 internal writer is supported for +R DL writing. But the finder says there is not enough room on the blank DVD (which is, of course, an 8.5gb disk). Am I missing something obvious?

I never realized this. So even though Apple heavily promotes the Mac Pro has having dual layer burning, you can't do it without buying Toast or something else?

Looking at Toast's website, even it doesn't say it will do dual-layer writing. Is it even possible in OS X?

Is there any way to use iDVD to put a file (not a picture file) on a DVD?

OK--so I bought Toast 7 and my first 3 DL DVD's are now coasters. I tried to copy a 6.1gb file to a DL disk and got the following error after Toast wrote about 10% of each disk:

The drive reported an error
Sense key= Illegal Request
Sense code= 0x21, 0x02
Buffer Underrun

I have no idea whether this is a disk quality issue, a drive issue or a Toast problem. But these are not cheap coasters. Anyone have any idea.

BTW, I started this thread in the PowerMac section because it didn't really fit anywhere else. My machine is a Quicksilver 867, 1gb RAM and an internal SONY DVD RW DRU-710A which the system profiler says is supported for dual-layer writing and which Toast sees and also recognizes the disk as DL.

Did you check with Roxio (or whoever it is that makes toast.) ? There's usually some support that comes with software. Go to the website?

And make sure you've updated to the most recent version available (7.1 as of this post).
I burn DL discs all the time, and so far I've not made any coasters (Verbatim brand).

I think the Finder will only burn DL on drives that report apple shipped/supported IN ASP. Drives that report Vendor supported require third party software to burn DL
