There is a link on the Macsurfer website about a guy who ordered a core solo 1.5 mac mini and received a core duo 1.66 mini with a 100gb drive and a superdrive. Apple silently updated the mini previously and appears to have done so again. Unless the guy is full of doodoo.

I ordered a mini on 8/25 maxed out (1.66, 120GB hd, 2GB ram), with an expected ship date of yesterday. Got an email today saying:

Due to an unexpected delay, we were unable to ship your product(s) by
the date originally quoted to you. We now anticipate shipping the
following item(s) as follows:

Z0D1, MACMINI 1.66 DUO CTO
will now ship by Sep 06, 2006
and deliver by Sep 07, 2006

We regret any inconvenience this delay may cause.

If the mini is being updated, would I be getting the maxed out newer version?

Now, should I take the chance of ordering a 1.5ghz and hoping for a 1.66ghz? I'll wait for some more responses I think.

i think there'd be more than 1 person if this were true. I'd wait to see. and there's no way that apple is going to update the mini that much without making a press release. What's more likely is that they are just running down their stock of the solos and replacing orders with duos, so that when the real updates show, they aren't stuck with old machines.

but that was such a minor upgrade.. from 1.42 to 1.5.. it wasn't even going to show up on benchmarks. this would be solo to dual core. that's pretty huge.

And what would be their explanation when they update in the future? Unless the silent update means the end of the Mini as we know it and we're in for an evolved Mini.....

it wasnt just clock speed from what i remember.

hard drive speeds were bumped from 4200 to 5400, and i could swear different optical drives were included as well not to mention an upgraded gpu.

The GPU was the same, but it had twice the VRAM. I have such a mini right under my couch.

I thought the Minis and the iBooks went from the 9200 to the 9250 in their last revisions the iBook having the official 32mb 9250 and the Mini with an un-official 64mb 9250.

Nope. No 9250 in the mini.

I'm not convinced this is an update. It could just be a mistake at the warehouse.

Well according to the rumour mill Apple is refusing to fill in bulk orders for the Mac mini and supplies are getting low...

Good, that means updates are pretty much imminent.

Mistakes like this happen from time to time.

And for refurbs, it's often the case. Lots of people report Apple refurbs with upgraded hard drives, memory, or video cards or whatever.

We'll see. Personally, I HATE silent updates, because if you happen to get old stock, there's nothing you can do about it.

Agreed. It's a bit of a shifty way for Apple to roll out updated product without taking a hit on the obsolete stock.

I'm kinda in the market for a Mini right now, so I'll wait and see if something becomes official in the Apple Store.

Acually the silent upgrade G4 did include something very good and speedier... a 64Mb ATi graphics card that supported Tiger's Core Imaging. Plus I believe the Xbench tests showed a bit of a speed increase.

The upgraded G4 Mini did have 64MB of VRAM, but it used the same ATI Radeon 9200 GPU as the previous model. The 9200 is not supported by Core Image.
