Hi
This is my first posting so here goes.

After receiving some kind of security alert my mini mac has lost all the pictures, music, word files dashboard files etc I have downloaded or produced on the mac.
Everthing seems to work OK
i-photo is a bit slow, but contains grey squares where all the photo's used to be. It also contains the folder/album names I gave to them (eg holiday June 06 etc), but no images.
All the music I copied from CD's onto i-tunes has gone, along with the podcasts.
The computer started up like it was the first time I had used it.
Has anyone got any ideas how to retrieve the missing photo's/files? The music I can live without.
Is this likely to reoccur, is it a virus?

Kindest Regards

RunningNeal

very weird. use command+shift+3 to create some screenshots, and ImageShack® - Hosting to post them online, then link them here. I'd like to see what you are talking about.

I don't think it is a virus. Viruses on a mac are extremely rare.

Hmmm, the grey squares in iPhoto sound like you have switched on 'Search for shared folders' in the preferences - and your machine is trying to find some.

Have you tried repairing permissions?

Hi again
I have screen dumped the iphoto page showing the blanks.

ImageShack - Hosting :: PhotoBlog

Try this link, as it is the first time I have used Image shack please let me know if you can't see the image.
Thanks for the help

Hi Will

Yes although there wasn't much to repair.
Where can I find the shared folders preference?

Did you change the name of your home folder at all?

If you did, change it back to what it used to be.

In iPhoto>Preferences>Sharing - look to see if 'Look for shared photos' is selected - though I suspect what seanc says may be the problem.

Hi Will and Seanc
Many thanks.
I have checked and you were right the preferences were looking for shared photo's.
I have been looking through the shared folder and discovered all my photo's and music etc. Great news. However, When I open either itunes or iphoto it appears to look for the files in in the wrong place. How can I get them to look at the shared files?
Regards
Neal

Did you try installing something like 'myphoto' (or maybe 'limewire') I know that 'myPhoto' requires you to move your iPhoto folder to another location and create an alias to it in the normal location - Seanc - any ideas?

My only thought was that the name of the home folder had been changed. I didn't really get an answer to that question.

Hi Will
Not intentionally, although after the system locked up and I force quited and restarted the computer seemed as if it was installing something.
Of course it was not just the photo's but all the music, word documents etc.
Many thanks
Kindest Regards
Neal
