I want to upgrade my 233 iMac from OS 8.5 to OS X. I understand about the firmware update but according to Apple that can only be done with OS 9. So I need a copy of OS 9 but wich one? I know what the retail version looks like, white disk with the number "9" on it. I have also seen many versions on a grey disk, are these OK to use, will they install over 8.5, are they CDs or DVDs? My machine has a tray loading CD rom drive. Please help, I am very confused as to what will work.

Thanks. I know there are so many diferent types og OS 9. I wonder if all these grey discs I see on ebay are usable for my purpose. In the PC world, disks that come with computers can only be used with those computers.
