I wanted to order a new Mac mini 1.66 but now it seems that you can't order it BTO with a Superdrive. What's up with that ? Was it always like that ?
Incredible how Apple always manages to cripple the low end products.

Indeed. The old solo mini had the BTO option for a SD.

I can only imagine that they did it to reduce costs on the low-end model. Less BTO options is cheaper.

you could get a rev a of the intel minis with a core duo 1.66 and a superdrive, i fail to see the problem...other than the fact that you cant buy it direct from apple (im sure it'll show up soon enough in the refurb section).
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

It seems apple did it to make the 1.83ghz mini more attractive. But get the 1.66 if that's what you want then hit up OWC or something to buy a superdrive and install it yourself.

I do see the problem. The 1.83 is 200 euros more expensive and we don't have a refurb section on our local Apple Store site (well we do, but it only offers software and ipod. I've never ever seen any Apple hardware there). And Apple resellers won't sell the old 1.66 at the price of a new 1.66.
So there is indeed a problem.

And I can't order from american websites. Customs we'll royally screw me and ask for import duties.

If I was you, I'd save for an extra few weeks, and just buy the higher specced mini.

Better still - beg steal and borrow the $200 /£130 from friends, familly or the mob (no, not the mob - you'll probably regret it) and dont go out for a month. You can use the cash saved to pay off your newe debts, whilst spending extra time with your new electronic buddy!

Warning: This advice could seriously impact relationships with your loved ones!
