Newbie here, be kind.
Windows PC died last week, started looking @ Mac. Then yesterday, the price dropped. How nice. Planning on a 20”…
Problem/question. I have a 7 and 11 year old that use our computer for school and fun. Their fun part is the issue. They only get 30 minutes/day max “playing’ and they are very limited with their selections (no violence/shooting etc.) but they have accumulated countless games they like to try from day to day. I am not going to replace any of them with Mac versions. Some of the newer games like Lego Star wars will be bought as Mac, but will these games work on the Mac if I load my windows xp and use the Mac’s built in Swap or Jump or whatever it is called?
Is the upgraded memory and graphics cards a big deal?
Thanks

I think Boot Camp is what you're looking for. Boot Camp allows you to reboot into Windows (dual booting) and works just like a normal pc, Parallels is virtualisation software which allows you to use both Mac OS X and Windows at the same time although there is NO 3d support in Parallels which means it would be useless for games.
OS X needs at least 1gb of Ram which I think comes with the new iMacs as standard, any PPC apps like Microsoft Office will be using Rosetta which is rather Ram hungry and would benefit from more than 1gb of Ram.

Eh, in my experience, MS Word will work OK with 1 GB as long as you don't have 10 other apps open — but you'll hate yourself forever if you try to run Photoshop with that much.

Ok then, I haven't got an Intel Mac yet it was just the general impression I got from the rest of the board.

Eh, that's my experience from using one at work. I guess people's mileage varies. (Probably many MacNNers do have a lot of big apps running, though.)
