When I ordered my MacPro 3.0 I coudn't wait the estimated 3 weeks to get the ATI Radeon X1900XT video card. So, I went and got it with the standard GeForce card, which is less than spectacular.

I was wondering if an aftermarket X1900XT card would work okay, especially since I can save about $60 bucks not ordering it from Apple.

Anyone?

Thanks!

No, it won't work. Only the X1900 from Apple has support for EFI.

FWIW
apple has begun shipping the X1900xt cards. I ordered mine a few weeks back and I just got notified that it was shipped about 2 week early.

Perhaps ATI cards do not work, but Nvidia cards apparently do:

You still need the nVidia card that Apple sells to be in the machine...

And you can't mix ATi + nVidia in the Intel Macs when running OSX, so Apple 7300 + COTS X1900 is a no-go.

there have been reports that having both an X1900 and a 7300GT (both Apple cards) works just fine under OS X, but not Windows. gotta find the post about it on the Macrumors forums.

Now that cards are shipping, it looks like this nut may have been cracked. This user reports that they have managed to dump their Mac card's ROM (the EFI part at any rate) and used it to MacOS X-enable an ASUS X1900 card. Since it's only the EFI part so far, my suspicion is that this card wouldn't work in Bootcamp anymore, but the post doesn't go into that level of detail yet.

edit: it looks like the post has been updated to confirm the suspicion: doesn't work in XP (since it's missing the BIOS portion of the ROM). This is still great news for Mac gamers. WoW addicts may soon have new options.
