Has anyone managed to get XP installed on there 24" iMac? Just got mine home and am trying to set it up, but the early 'DOS like' bit of the XP install from the CD (the bit where you format the disk) isn't doing anything.
I am planing on seeing if I can move the entire XP install from my old 20" to the new partition, but I need to get XP to format the partition first.

Yes, although I did create the partition with the older one that came as part of the standard install (didn't realise it was pre installed, I had done a firewire transfer from my old iMac as part of set up).
But surely this shouldn't matter as that just does the partitioning part, the (unformatted) partition did exist, as you could see in Disk Utility.

Trying a different approach. I put the 24" in to FW disk mode, started my old iMac in XP, and formatted Windows partition on the 24" from there. the swapped round so I could copy the FULL XP install to the 24". It all depends how badly XP freaks out under the different HW on the 24".

Will I need to make a new XP drivers disk for the 24", I already have a 1.1.1 driver disk?

:: important ::
Anyone considering buying a 24" iMac and installing XP via Bootcamp needs to HOLD OFF
The XP installer DOES NOT support the minimum display resolution. NON of the XP install is visible, UNTIL the Apple driver CD will get to load it's drivers. This means that installing XP is IMPOSSIBLE.

Apple Support Thread

If you REALLY want to run XP you should HOLD OFF with your purchase until this problem is resolved

Me, I am considering returning it, then going back when this has been resolved.
This NEEDS flaging up so people know about it, I wish I had known earlier this weekend

Oh come on, don't return it, it's an XP issue, not the machine.

The only way to fix this is to actually change the xp install cd itself not the driver disk, I have no idea how o do this, but I imagine it would actually be rather straight foward for someone who knows the backend of the xp instaler.

I'm not sure anyone can return a Mac because XP doesn't work. Think of a better reason and Apple might listen.

a few reasons (and I have been doing very well on my 20"). As a web developer I sometimes need to check sites on Xp, I also need to do ASP web development for which you need to have a local IIS server, I have also been enjoying a few of the games that are available for the PC and not the Mac.
Before I got my 20" Intel iMac I managed to do this buy using a very cheap PC and remote desktop, but this wasn't the ideal solution.

Theres always parellels... I had to get a new logic board on my macbook pro because of installing xp... I dunno what tempted me to do it becasue I've owned a mac since 1984... maybe just to see what all the fuss is about. I think it's rediculous to return a perfectly good computer just because its unable to run windows... yet. Have you tried to F8 to log into the EFI boot system and resize the screen?

There IS a way to do this. If anyone in this thread had bothered to look in the forum explicitly for running something other than Mac OS X on Macs they'd have seen the big old thread about Boot Camp and the 24" iMac.

So I'm closing this thread and directing everyone to the thread I mentioned above.

Really folks, just look around a little before you start freaking out, ok?
