Good people,
I am waiting for my new iMac 24" Intel machine to arrive and will want to upgrade the memory right away. However the machine comes with both the memory slots filled with 512 memory made by Kingston. I do CAD work and need at least twice that memory and need to upgrade to at least 2 Gigs. I have visited many memory sales sites but find that most are VERY expensive. Does anyone have any information about where I can go to purchase (2) 1 Gig memory modules to replace the ones I have? The Memory has to be guaranteed to work on this iMac 24" intel duo machine but we all know that "lifetime" only means the lifetime of the company that is selling you the product. Thanks for any information.
Ron

Is it too late to change the order? It's cheaper if you get the 2x1 GB modules pre-installed from Apple.

Why didn't you get 2GB of RAM when you ordered the iMac? Apple's RAM prices are actually very competitive these days. I haven't seen anyone post about RAM prices that are that much cheaper than Apple's.
Plus, you crack open that case and you're going to void your warranty.

Installing memory does not void the warranty.

Cracking your case does. Apple wont touch your machine in most cases if they see physical damage.

The original poster said nothing about "cracking the case". Only maroma did. The only "case cracking" that will happen with the original poster is installing memory (and yes, that involves opening the memory compartment of the case), and that does not void the warranty of course.

Yeah I meant that in reference to maroma's post.
Opening the memory compartment to upgrade memory obviously doesn't void warranty.

Sorry, my "cracking the case" statement was purely metaphorical, not literal.
And I didn't know that the user could install memory on his own without taking to an authorized dealer without voiding the warranty. My bad. That makes me a feel a bit better about the whole thing. I'll be getting 2GB from Apple but will eventually (hopefully sooner, rather than later) be upgrading to 3GB, so I'm glad to know I don't have to bring it in to the shop to have it done.
So crack away!

Good People,
I bought my iMac from MacMall which has much more competitive pricing than Apple, but still would have had to wait for the upgrade anyway, because they would have considered it a "custom" configuration and charged even more. I have such limited funds that I need to shop around in monetary terms, but not in quality. I have owned Macs for 15 years and only bought from Apple a couple of times because they do not want to compete with their re-salers, which is understandable. However, it puts me in a difficult position for upgrades. I want to thank you all for your generous support. You are a great resource.
The lowest I have seen the price thus far is on an internet sight calle 4All Memory and each Samsung 1 Gig module costs $130 with a lifetime warrantee. You can easily find them on the internet and you even get to speak with a sales rep. on the phone. I will not purchase anything on the net if the company does not have a phone or customer service access number that actually functions. So I hope that someone out there has experience purchasing 3rd party ram at a reasonable price that may meet the same qualifications as the 4All Memory company but with a better price. Thanks again.
Ron

What's the deal here? The same memory was only $195 a couple of weeks ago.

RAM prices fluctuate wildly. Its a shady business, if you ask me. They claim it has to do with supply and demand, but I think there's something more to it.
