curious if anyone has tried upgrading the original Core1 chip in an intel iMac (or mini, or MacBook(Pro) to a Core 2 Duo chip? If so, how difficult/expensive was this process -- the chips are pin-compatible, right? And was there any noticeable performance increase?

the Core 2 Duo chip is a 64 bit chip and the Core Duo (1) is a 32 bit chip.

Is OSX different for these = the OSX you got with your Core Duo will not work with the Core 2 Duo upgrade?

Answer: OSX Tiger is 64bit already, but they are locking the Core 2 Duo at 32bit for now. OSX Tiger will work with 32 or 64 bit chips.

What do you mean by locking the Core2duo to 32 bit? Moving to a 64bit chip will enable access to the 64 bit libraries available within OS X.
