If anyone has recently shipped either a Power Mac G5 or a Mac Pro, can you post what it cost ot ship it? When I use the on line shipping calculator at the UPS site I get something like $120 for UPS ground CA to NY. That sounds really high..I thought it would be more like $60..it is a heavy box though...

I did a quote for ground shipping in a 22x22x22 box to a non-business address from San Diego to New York City. The weight I used was 50lbs (approx weight of tower, box and accessories) and I didn't include insurance over the initial $100.

The total cost came to a little over $63. I would say that $120 is very high.

Thanks....$63 sounds right. I used 65 pounds for weight bec. that is what my Mac Pro box says on the outside, that may have pushed it into another price bracket. Most people on ebay are charging around 50 to 60 so that is probably right.

If you're going to use eBay as a measure of shipping then consider eBay rates on the high end. Almost every eBay seller price gouges on shipping.

I've shipped several B&W's and G4's to & from various points across the US and the highest one was $48, which was from FL to LA.

But remember, many shipping companies have recently started charging not only by weight, but also volume/size...ie the larger the box is physically, the more it costs, and NOT simply because of the added weight

I know because I tested this recently by shipping 2 boxes that weighed exactly the same (to the 10th of an ounce), but one box was only a few inches wider/taller than the other. That box cost me $3.35 more to ship :

And NO, none of them will admit to this practice
Signatures are ugly. Bitchy women are ugly......YOU do the math :)

bowwowman has it right.
Shipping costs are part magic and part invention. Shipping a G5 is a beast. I had one get hit hard enough to jam the cd tray. FedEx gave me $100 American dollars as foregiveness. Lesson learned. Shipping is all about trucks, brakes, tires, pavement, loading docks and 20 year old boys throwing boxes. If it is worth worrying about, insure it and don't look for the cheapest way out!
