Will an emac or an imac from the states work if you were to plug it into a european socket with an adapter cable? does it have the automatic switch like the laptop bricks do?

And do you also know if the same goes for the Power Mac (any family) or the Mac Pro?

Normally, yes it will work, but in extreme cases, it won't.

Um, actually not true for the eMac, there is a 'eurpoean' model which has an LHR module, the manual states:-
Note: This part is used in Europe for line conditioning...

Also have a look on Apple's Support>Specification pages for the eMac, you'll see it does not have a switching power supply. Step down transformers are available and since eMacs don't use KWs of power, they need not be too big.

Good luck - hope that helps and you enjoy your stay in (or move to) Europe.

As others have said, there may be ways of making it work, but if you're considering buying one and shipping it back, then it's probably not worth the hassle. Also remember that unlike the portables, Applecare is not international.
