I feel like I'm beating a dead horse but I really want a new iMac TODAY, lol!

I need a response within the next 2-4 hours, lol.

So here are my choices,
If I just get a stock 2.0GHz C2D iMac w/ its 2x512MB of RAM now can I eventually swap one of the 512 for a 1gig stick yielding 1.5gigs will it perform just as well?

Can I eventually swap 1 512 for a 2gig stick yielding 2.5gigs will it perform fine?

And option 3 can I eventually swap both 512s 1 for a 1gig and 1 for a 2 gig yielding 3gb total, i think this should be fine as this is an apple option.

And just a quick question, how should the 1gig do for the interim? Office and all that jazz should be fine right? (rosetta) I don't really do anything all that ram intensive. I already have an edu core duo at the office w/ 1gig and the gma950 and it is great, I expect the c2d w/ dedicated gfx to be better.

Thanks!!!!

Hi,

All of those options should work. Since you are talking about an iMac without the integrate GMA 950, performance should be ok even though you will not have matched pairs of memory. The matched pairs really improve things for the machines using the GMA 950. For machines with standard GPUs the matched pairs still improve memory performance but the negative effects of having unmatched pairs are not as noticeable in my opinion.

Hope this helps.

Going to an unmatched memory setup, there's going to be a slight decrease in performance for applications that are sensitive to memory bandwidth. The good news is that most applications are more memory capacity sensitive rather than memory bandwidth sensitive.

Any combination of 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB modules will work.
