I am trying to decide rather to get the mac mini with a gig of ram, 1.66 ghz processor and 100 gb hd or a 17inch imac 1.83 ghz 512 ram and 160gb hd. I will be buying refurbished since i cant really afford a new one right now (college). I have a high def camcorder and will hopefully get final cut express or studio sometime in the future along with more RAM. Do you have to have a powermac for final cut to run smoothly? Also how long do you think it will be before the core2duo pop up on the refurbished market? answers please

For what you want to do I would go with the iMac. It would probably be a few more months before you see and core2's on Refurb.

There will always be something better that comes out. Unless the Core 2's are released in the next 2 weeks I wouldn't wait. The question you really need to ask is Do I need it now to do my work or can I wait. If you can wait I would wait and see what comes out. If not get one now and don't worry about it.

If you don't already have a screen, the iMac is a better bet. But, please think hard about getting the 2.0Ghz 17" It's not a huge jump in price, but it gives you more speed, more RAM, dedicated graphics, Bluetooth, the Apple remote. - One of the best value upgrades in any Apple system.

Apple always has refurbs.

The Apple Store (U.S.)

And since you are a student you should get a discount if buying new. The Core 2 Duos are 40% faster than Core Duos. For school, a notebook may be better and the MacBooks and MacBook Pros are fast. Wait a bit longer if you can for at least a Core 2 Duo iMac.
