I got my new 20" imac in the mail today and so far so good. no dead pixels and it's dead quiet. I want to transfer my itunes library and my iphoto library from my G4 tower. What would be the best way to do this?

Hmm, it should have asked you during startup if you wanted to xfer stuff from an old computer: if not, I'm sure the app is kicking around in either apps or apps/utilities. Transfer assistant? Something like that.

(It's Migration Assistant, and it's in apps/utility).

Firewire cable or wired ethernet recommended: AirPort is doable, but if you gots lots of stuff, it'll take a wee while. You can also just copy the folders from ~/<your name>/Music and ~/<your name>/Photos.

I used firewire target disk mode, it's the best!

I'd argue it's Apple's greatest invention.

Turn on file sharing in prefs on both machines, take a note of your Dot.local addy, plug in a FW cable and 'Command K' the beasts. Go ahead and copy the folders straight over. Fast and sweet as always.

Just remember to 'de-autherise' your G4 (if you have an iTMS account) before reformatting it for sale.
As an aside, is there ANY PC's that Firewire target disk mode. I fine it odd that non of the laptop manufactures have been 'influenced' by this years old Apple innovation.

It's the shortcut for "Connect to Server…" in the Finder.
