I want to upgrade the SuperDrive in my PowerMac, then put that old drive (Pioneer 107) into an eMac.

There's a nice article at MacWorld on this. Seems easy enough. But has anyone here actually done this?

The main reason I want to do it is so that I can upgrade the OS on the eMac to Tiger. Using target disk mode would work in a pinch, but it's never quite right when done that way - the OS installs for the hardware config of the machine running the installer, not the hardware config of the machine in target disk mode. And it would be nice to have a SuperDrive in the eMac, anyway.

So I'm looking for advice and experience from others that done this upgrade.

Not 100% sure which eMac it is... I think either the 800Mhz or 1Ghz version. (I'm buying a keyboard for it today, and then I can boot it up and check.)

Yep, it's that easy. You really are just swapping out the drives, the OS will do the rest.

I replaced the drive on a friends eMac and it worked like a charm. It took less than a half hour.

Also have a look here:

Apple eMac Upgrade Guide - and also see his 'eServer' page.

I think the eMac motherboard makes an excellent candidate for rehousing if the video circutry goes.

I've replaced the 107 in my PowerMac with a 111D. That seems to be okay. Now I'll have to try putting the 107 in the eMac - probably get to that next week.
