Hello,

I've just taken delivery of a replacement 24" iMac for one that made weird fan/screen/PSU noises, but this one does the same, and has a stuck pixel to boot - so back it goes!

Ironically, though all I want is a dedicated graphics card, a desktop HD and a large screen, the only option is the sledgehammer-to-crack-a-nut MacPro. With all the waiting in with the iMacs, I'm looking for a solution that I can walk into a shop and walk out with what I want.

So, I was wondering what CTO options are available in the retail Applestores. Ideally, I'd be interested in possibly an extra gig of RAM and the x1900xt (depending on how much noise it makes - anyone care to comment?), but the most important is the Airport and Bluetooth. And does this vary from store to store, in which case how do the Regent Street or Bluewater stores do?

Thanks for any information,

David

All of them are available at an earthly store... it will just take longer for certain configurations to be delivered to the store.

I'm pretty sure most CTO stuff can't be done in store. They can add RAM and Airport cards, but other than that I wouldn't be so sure. Things like hard drives, video cards, processors, etc are all done in the factory. An Apple Store can probably order a CTO machine from the factory and have it shipped to the store for you to pick up, but at that level you might as well just have it be shipped to your house.

FWIW I got mine BTO at an Apple Store here in London - it took a while to have it delivered, but my dealings were entirely with the bricks and mortar store so it is possible.

I had a discount at the store that I couldn't get online, and the extra little bit of hassle was worth my while.

Interesting - was it Cancom or the actual AppleStore? - because those are the stores that will give me an edu discount?

Great - turns out Cancom don't do edu discount on hardware, so Regent st, or possibly Bluewater it will be for me. You didn't have a 'goody bag' 10% off card, did you? - I still haven't managed to use mine.

Cool - I tried to persuade them that it was also good with my HE discount - it didn't work, so I'm still not going to be able to use it. Any idea if I can get a decent price for it, or even if I am allowed to sell it?

Mine had my name on the back - so likely not. You could always give it to a friend who might use it, or hang onto it for a while. Mine sat in a drawer for two years
