Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I don't see where it would fit otherwise.

Was thingking about getting an Xserve G4 for a file server- four bays and todays large disks would make it a very nice machine.

My question is, does anyone know if there are controller limitations on the size of the HDD- I know on the desktop G4's before a certain point (MDDs I believe), the controllers would only recognize up to 120GB per partition.

This would of course dampen my efforts at a JBOD or R5 setup in an Xserve G4.

Anyone know the answer?

According to Mactracker, the oldest Xserve G4s did not have that limitation. In fact, some of the slot loading G4 Xservers shipped with 180GB hard drives installed.

I don't have any experience with the original G4 Xserves but the new(ish) G5 xserve that we do have will only take Apple Drive Modules. In other words, you can't just buy an off the shelf drive and stick it in there. Needless to say, the ADM's are not exactly cheap.

Apple drive modules = any old drive plus slot loader. And the G4's as far as I know always comes with them, not so with the G5's.

Thanks for the confirmation Tuoder, I found the knowledgebase article from apple that states the same thing.
