Hey guys, just wanted to see if you guys had a diagnosis or some idea about how to fix this. I appreciate the help.

The last few days my 1.8 Ghz 17-inch iMac G5 keeps locking up, regardless of what program I'm running. This is sometimes accompanied with a screen that goes black with a few thin gray stripes flashing across the top. Other times, the computer crashes and the fans start going full blast. I've had to do a manual restart each time.

The computer has been flawless up until now (it's 1.5 years old), with the exception being an incident that happened the week after I purchased it. I left it in sleep mode and came back to find the fans running full blast and the "sleep" light on full blast, also.

Any idea what could be causing this? It's under warranty, but I REALLY don't want to have to send it in...

Seems to me like it would easily be a power supply issue or an overheating issue. A fan could be bad and it shuts off to prevent it from overheating. A bad powersupply with rails out of wack will cause a machine to freeze or shut down randomly. How often does it do this and does it do it all the time after a certain period of time? The G5's were easy to open from what I've been told. I'd open up the back and turn it on and make sure those fans are running and free of dust.
