Does anybody here have some reliable information as to when the new Xserves will start shipping? All Apple says is October. Is that still valid, i.e. will it be within the next eight days?

I imagine when they said October, they meant Oct 31st, much like the shuffle.

Hmm, you can order the shuffle now and Apple says it will ship by October 31. OTOH you can't even configure the Xserves yet.

Well, they changed it to "shipping by mid November". At least you can configure and order the Xserve now.

Is it just me or did they change the specs/prices?
I remember reading something like "dual 2.66 GHz Xeon starting at $2999" and now it looks as if the $2999 price is only if you take 2.0 GHz Xeons. The base price for the 2.66 GHz Xeon models is $3798.

I seem to remember it was the 2.0Ghz Zeons for $2999. What I'm surprised about is that the Dual Power Supplies cost more. I thought it was a built in option.
Also, is it just me, or does it seem like we're the only people that care?

Well, maybe my memory is just playing a trick on me. It's a bit weird though because $2999 will get you a dual 2.66 GHz MP. At this price point, going MP->Xserve basically means adding $1k.

I thought that as well. I was kinda surprised that it's a $200 option. Who wouldn't want it?

Seems so.
My research group wants to build a tiny cluster for visualization of number crunching results done on a really big machine (Cray XT3). We were thinking of getting two to three Xserves and an Xserve RAID. The money's been granted too, now it's just up to Apple to start delivering these beasts.
