I use office on my MacBook, and it runs fine. It runs faster in G5s, but hey, it is not like it is terrible. A MacBook should be slower than an iMac, so you should be fine.

Also, it has been mentioned that OpenOffice will run natively, and deal with Office's files, so if it becomes an issue, there are other options.

My 20" Core Duo iMac took forever for Word to start - at least 8-10 bounces. On my buddy's MBP it opens in 1-2 bounces. I don't understand... we both had 2GB ram, same processor/speed... Hopefully my 24" iMac will be quicker.

It all depends if Rosetta had been run before.

If you try Word again after the initial start you will find it starts much quicker.

I have a PB 12" 1.33hz with 1.25gb RAM and an iMac Core2Duo 17" 2ghz 1gb RAM. I'd say they run just about the same overall but on some tasks one is just a little faster than the other and vice versa.

I can't tell any difference between speed on these machines. Th eoffice apps have never been the fastests anyway.

It's not so slow that you won't be able to use it - infact it's fine - just buy it.
