Hey guys I'm looking to switch my mom because I'm tired of all her computer problems and this thread is about what to give her.
I've got my old 1.5ghz stealth upgrade mac mini g4 kicking around ever since I upgraded to a mbp, I could give her it but it's got sentimental value plus I'm thinking of putting it on my tv in a month or two.
OR
I could pick up a 1.5ghz core solo from a place I know for a pretty good price.
She's doesn't need anything remotely strong because all she does is email really but I'd like to get her something that'll last a little longer so I'm leaning towards the core solo.
Now which is stronger now and better for leopard in the future a 1.5ghz g4 mini with 1gb ram or a 1.5ghz core solo mini with 1gb ram?
I know the duo will rape the g4 but I don't have that kinda cheedar after buying my mbp so I'm looking at the solo, after all I'm only 20.

I'd put my money on the intel mini due to the faster bus speed/newer processor
In comparing scores in the xbench database (not exactly science, but gives a general idea) the core solo mini scores about 62-65, and the g4 scores around 48-50

All thingd being equal, I'd say the core solo.

Since the low-end mini is now a Duo, is the Solo really that much cheaper?
For most things, I'd take the Solo. I can only think of a handful of apps that the G4 would be better with.

Get Solo. Leopard will work much better with Intel chips due to the bigger system bus.

Alright solo it is! Thanks guys!
mduell The low end duo is 658cad and I found the solo for 599cad+free printer+free iwork+free .mac.
So it's worth it to me to get the free stuff for myself considering my mom only emails and surfs the net and I'd get free .mac and iwork, I don't know which one of us would take the printer, neither of ours is bad really.

Since your mom only use it for email, why not get the solo, keep all the freebies to yourself and use the printer as a network printer for both of you as a back printer? Think all the money you saved on the freebies.
