I have an imac with vs 10.4.8, 1.83 GHz Intel duo, all my software and firmware are up to date, but when I run Boot Camp Assistant to install, I get the infamous, "You must update your firmware..." thing. It's updated. Geez. Any ideas? My imac is new... about two months old... I shouldn't have a firmware issue.

Try looking in the Alternative Operating Systems forum. LOTS of stuff there about "the infamous" and everything else Boot Camp related.
