Heya guys, any recommendations for a powered-USB hub?
My Intel iMac (early 2006) has got only 3 USB ports:
1 for Apple keyboard (has 2 ports on it, but aren't self-powered)
1 for Razer Krait mouse
1 for iPod
... and I'm outta ports!
I have a HP printer, and sometimes a USB card reader, and I find it annoying to have to unplug/plug the cables.

What about this Belkin 7-port hub? Is it reliable? Anyone using it?
What about other alternatives?
Thanks!

A hub us a hub us a hub. They all work the same. Choose on price and aesthetics.

Hi,
In theory all USB hubs rated at the same speed should be the same. In practice that is not always the case.
I have a Kensington Dome Hub connected to my iMac Core 2 Duo. It has worked very well so far.

You can find this hub and amazon.com, buy.com etc.

Hmm, but this isn't AC powered right?
Eg; if I plug my Razer mouse into the Apple keyboard's USB port, I would get an error message in OS X telling me that the mouse is drawing too much power. Same thing applies if I plug in my iPod.
Am I correct to say that?

The Hub on the apple keyboard is a USB 1.1 hub. It supplies power for mice and powered things like printers and thats about it. I use the dome hub and it has enough power to supply power for a usb fan, hard drive, a floppy drive, flash drive(s), and my usb apple keyboard and mouse. You will be fine.

Yes, but my mouse draws much more power than the Mighty Mouse does.

Then connect it to the hub and connect your printer or other independently powered device into the keyboard.

The D-Link DUB-H4 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub doesn't look too bad at least in terms of specs and price. It is powered and is about $20 bucks. If I didn't need a powered one, I would go with the Kensington for aesthetics.

Just get the cheapest powered hub you can find. A hub is just a hub. They're all the same.

In practice, not all hubs are the same, but by now the worst ones should have been weeded out. Personally, i use the Kensington dome hub recommended above - it works fine, looks nice and is heavy enough that I don't pull it around the desk all the time. And yes, it is powered.
About powered or not: The USB ports in your computer supply max 500 milliamps at 5Vs. The ones in any unpowered hub, such as the one in Apple's keyboard, supply 100 mA. Most mice and similar units are fine with that, but apparently some aren't. Many other USB units without an external power supply require the full 500 mA from a port, and when they do, you get a message in the OS. This is the same in both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0.

What an odd thread. First, a peripherals question outside the Peripherals forum (the only acceptable location), and now a hijacking to shop for a motherboard?!?
