iMac G5, latest OSX. 2GB RAM, 2.1 Ghz, 250GB HD.

A few days ago I was experiencing some techinical difficulties with my iPod shuffle dock. Whenever it was plugged in iTunes would have a hard time recognizing the device, and it would constantly disappear and reappear every few seconds. It went away for a bit and I didn't think anything of it. Then, a few days later, I encountered a relatively serious problem. My mouse and keyboard would just stop working (standard keyboard and mighty mouse, USB), but the computer would keep running in the background.

I restarted the computer a few times, and on each successive start-up the keyboard and mouse would stop working and go unresponsive after a minute or so. Eventually, the problem escalated to kernal panics which would strike at, or a few minutes after start up. A few times, the kernal panics would happen DURING start up, but that problem has seemed to cease.

Obviously, this presents a dilemma. I can't try and find the source of my kernal panics since the keyboard and mouse won't work (even when I try and run OSX off the disc and do a reinstall). Interestingly, I started up the machine in firewire drive mode, and I was able to access and modify the harddrive easily through my iBook (and take the time to back up all of my music, movies, etc.). There seems to be nothing wrong with the computer in that respect. Due to the scenarios in the first paragraph, I get the feeling this is an issue with the USB ports, drivers, or firmware or something.

I plan on taking the computer to the Apple Store tomorrow, but I would rather not have to if anyone here can offer up some helpful advice.

Thanks for reading.

Are you saying the kernel panics are happening with the Shuffle attached?
