I've been looking for some tests conducted with the new Intel Mac mini 1.83 GHz model against older G4 style machines (Quicksilver or MDD models).

I have an older G4 800 MHz but with a dedicated video card and a 7200 RPM 8 MB cache hard drive. Was wondering what kind of speed difference I would be noticing.

This ain't really a benchmark, but Intel machines should be far faster in universal apps, and faster in non-universal apps as well. Macworld, as I recall has kept some G4s in tests for reference. I believe that ones faster than the one you have were beaten even when handicapped by rosetta.

I wonder how a game running through Rosetta with a GMA950 would run next to a G4 with discreet video.

Well here's what I've got going on.

I have an ADC-only monitor right now and a failing mouse soon to die. So if I purchased a Mac mini I would need to first upgrade the memory (especially because its shared with the graphics), and get a mouse and keyboard combo. Then either an ADC-DVI connector or a new monitor.

But if I look at the 17" iMac for $1199, it already comes with the faster Core 2 Duo with more L2 cache, already more RAM, a dedicated graphics card, includes the mouse and keyboard, and takes care of my monitor problem.

I guess I just talked myself out of a Mac mini.
