Hi,
I just bought a 512M memory upgrade for our iMac G5. The memory module is the correct 184 pin 512M DDR 400Mhz PC3200U-30330.
It's very easy to upgrade memory in this iMac G5. Three screws at the bottom, off comes the back case and there's memory on the right. I have Apples pdf that shows the steps which I followed.
When align the notch correctly and slide the module in, it will not go down far enough to seat properly and allow the latches to click and hold it in place. I really pressed hard using thumb and forefinger. It seems to be stopped in the middle.
Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?
Thanks

Do you have the memory in in the right direction with the key (notch between gold pins) on the correct side? If not, flip the stick over. You should be able to push in until it clicks.

Thanks, Steve. I believe I have it properly situated. The notch is left of center in the connector and I flip the module so the inverted-U shaped notch in its pcb lines up with it. When I press it down, goes down about 1/8th of an inch and stops. There is still about 1/16th of an inch of the gold plating on the pcb pins still visible at that point. I have both of the clips pulled back out of the way. They couldn't reach the indent in the module at this point anyway.
I must be doing something really strange! I've done this in a G3 powerbook, in an iMac DV and in an iMac G4 and never had any trouble.

You have to push down and into the slot fairly hard, at least on mine. I followed Apple's instructions and they weren't the clearest.

Thanks, Mitch.
I pushed really hard both thumbs on the top of the memory module and my fingertips over the edge of the case. I think that if I pushed any harder, I would have broken something.
Glad yours went in ok.

The issue here really is how "thick" the memory module is.
The variable that affects that is the RAM memory chip density.
The first module I had was one with memory chips on both sides of the module. This means that there is is additional printed wiring layers to get the extra circuits from 8 more high density, high pin count chips to the inputs and outputs of the module.
The second module had only 8 chips on the module. It wasn't easy to get in but at least it went.
Simple message. You want to upgrade the memory in a G5 iMac, buy chip modules with only 8 chips on the module.
Thanks to all for the support and suggestions!
