hey,
I just upgraded from a g4 Mac Mini to a Mac Pro, and I couldn't be happier. The one issue I have right now (short of the keyboard tray I had to loose so it could fit under my desk - is my 14 month son is fond of pushing buttons.
i was wondering if anyone knew of any hack app that can disable the power button once it is started up? I can see the importance of having it function normally for startup and firmware updates, so I don't want to disconnect it. I don't want to cover it up either cause that will hinder air flow.
any suggestions? I saw apple has something built in for the monitor, but what about the tower?

Hardware buttons aren't easily disabled - especially not power buttons. You'd have to change a firmware setting to get the machine not to sleep (or shut down if held down) on the push of the button, and I know of no way to do that.

goto Sys. Prefs -> Energy Saver -> Options
you can set it only to put the mac to sleep and wake it from sleep..
though i have never heard of anything to completly disable the power button..

I've never looked inside my Mac Pro but I bet you could physically disconnect that button. Can you turn the Mac on using the keyboard like the old G4s? (I also upgraded from G4 to XEON). When I get home from my current trip I'll look inside my Mac and see...

The best answer is a simple one. Just get some duct tape or clear packing tape and tape a quarter over the button so he can't push the button. He'll be unlikely to remove the tape.

No, no Apple removed keyboard power on from modern Macs. Even keyboards with power buttons cannot power on from the keyboard.

Instead of looking into tech solutions, why not have a look into how-to-raise-my-kid solutions?

I'm guessing you've never had a 14 month old, or you'ld know how insane that suggestion is?
Anyway, thanks to Kick52 - Unchecking that box in the Energy Saver allows my son to press the button and not have it affect the machine. The button still functions for starting up, and thats all I wanted.
Thanks!
