I want to connect my PB, which has the mini DV connector to the TV. Instead of getting the Mini DV to TV adapter from apple, I thought I'd get the DVI to TV adapter, since that would work with all other macs, and I could just use the mini DV>DVI in addition to save from getting 2 adapters.
However, the DVI to TV has 4 extra pins which won't let the 2 connectors mate. WTF are the 4 extra pins for? Does anyone know what I am trying to explain?

Is it a DVI -> Component (red, green, and blue RCAs) adapter? I've read alot about those cables not working properly unless the video card you are plugging them into supports outputting a compatible HDTV signal

Wow. OK, your idea is not going to work. The mini-DVI to DVI adaptor only provides digital signals for use with a DVI connection. The analog signals for VGA and TV (multiplexed together) are not provided on the mini DVI to DVI adaptor. This was so you wouldn't have to string two dongles together to get a VGA or TV connection. Multiple dongles can severely degrade signal quality. This is also why there are separate mini-DVI to VGA and mini-DVI to TV dongles. The extra 4 "pins" on the standard DVI to TV dongle are the blades for the analog signals since the standard DVI connector includes the analog signals directly.
In other words, Apple doesn't want you to have to use two dongles strung together, either for the standard or the mini DVI connectors on their machines. You'll need to purchase the extra dongle.
Steve
P.S. I helped design the mini-DVI connector and the dongles for it while I was at Apple, so I know a bit about them! ;-)

Hi Steve,
I was hoping you could help me out with a quick question - is there an adapter that will allow me to connect my Macbook to a TV? It appears that the mini-dvi to TV adapter offered by Apple requires a Macbook Pro. Thanks in advance!

The mini-DVI to TV adapter will work with the MB. The MBP has DVI and requires a DVI->TV adapter. You couldn't attach a mini-DVI adapter to a MBP at all.
