Will I be able to use items stored on my LaCie external hard drive? I presently use an iMac 400 DVD ... the CD/DVD basically does't work any more. IE is a real problem, and my OS was upgraded to 9.2.2. Thought it might be better to up grade to a new iMac at this time. What I primarily want to keep is all my banking records, income tax, photos and genealogy records that are stored on this external hard drive.

Thanks for any input. And I am not computer literate so please keep that in mind!

Sure you'll be able to use your external drive and the files it contains.

Thanks...someone told me that I would need all new applications (no support for Classic OS 9) on the new iMac which I undestand but wondered about the old stuff on the external hard drive.

Before you casually assume your data will transfer, bear in mind that to use your data once on the new machine you will have to have an OS X program that can access and use the files. Turbo Tax, for example, wouldn't/couldn't open the files created under the OS 9 version of the program. So check to see what will work and what won't. Word processing is likely not a problem but the more unique the program the greater the risk that you will have unusable data.
