Ok, I got an old PMG4 MDD, with a combo drive... suddenly that Combo Drive it's failing me since last week, it doesn't read all cd-roms, it can't see any blank CD-R I put to burn something to... what's happening here? what can I do to solve this problem, thanksfuly I got in the second drive bay filled with a brand new CD-RW drive and it works fine but it's not bootable so, I got both drives installed since the beginning so, it's not an issue of hardware installation, I've been using both for more than 3 years now more or less... what is wrong?

thanx

It sounds like the combo drive may be dead. Buy a new drive, replace it and you should be fine.

and why this happened with it? I never thought that a drive could die someday, my old B&W G3 still works fine, though... and never being on this kind of problem... I wonder if it just an issue of firmware or something like that... anyway, I just buy an Apple superdrive for $32.00 bucks at macsales.com right now. but I feel like I am throwing away a good drive....

any 64mb graphic card out there for a PBMDD ? I Still got 32mb on mine..?

I've had some drives die on my macs
I never knew what made them go dodgy, but they just died.
Installed the system again, checked the cables, power supply, everything...
just dead, or in one case, it just refused to read some DVDs or CDs, and others no prob...

If you can, replace it with a new one.

I don't know why they die either, but I've seen a few dead ones... Same symptoms as Madrag mentioned; either inability to read some DVDs or CDs or unreliably.

What's a PBMDD?

I can't remember which video cards had 64MB, but I'm sure there were some...
