I was just wondering if the standard config Mac Pro (with the nVidia 7300GT card) ships with the power cable for powering a graphics card that requires external power. The 7300GT doesnt require any additional power but the X1900 does so if you order that after you have gotten your Mac Pro, do you get the power cable with it or is it already there in your Mac.

Unless they tucked/hid it away somewhere in the case (which they very well may have done- I cant see any wires in this thing) I don't think so. I have a 7300GT MP, and don't see any video card power cable in the case, and one certainly didn't come out of the case.

Hmm...I was actually planning on using a PC X1900XT card and flashing it to EFI to work with Mac Pros but if the Power cable isnt already fitted, then I'll have to make arrangements for that.
Thanks

When you buy the graphics card it almost always comes with a 4-pin Molex -> PCIe adapter so you shouldn't have to worry. If not, just head down to your local computer shop and pick one up.

From what I've been reading, the card connects to the motherboard through a six pin cable instead of directly to the PSU. I do have that six-pin to molex connectors.

The upgrade kit from apple includes the 6 pin "PCIe-style" external power cable. The connector on the motherboard is smaller than the one on the graphics card, so a particular cable is needed. People have linked a source for the cable before, but I can't find one off the top of my head.
Speaking from personal experience, routing the molex connectors from the PSU down to the expansion bay is a serious pain in the rear. The Pro is heavily compartmentalized and and its very annoying to route cables from one section to another.

My X1900XT upgrade, purchased thru Apple, came with the cable. I think you can find them from some parts dealers, but I seem to recall they're priced at like $35 or something crazy (since technically its a grey-market service part).

The card comes with the needed cable from Apple. However, it is a pain in the ass to plug it in. The connector on the motherboard is literally RIGHT UNDERNEATH another large compartment in the computer, so theres virtually no way of getting your hand in there to plug it in. It requires alot of "holding the cable by it's middle, and trying to worm it in and by luck have it land on the connector on the motherboard.
In fact, once I got it in place finally, it felt so Voodoo that ever since, i've always felt that my video card is barely connected... but no problems have shown up so it must just be a feeling...

Found a place that sells these and have ordered it already.
Thanks for all the help. I do have large hands so I might have problems installing it as macgeek.

Could you *please* tell me, where you got the cable?
I would like to put my Geforce 7900GT as an additional card into my Mac Pro, just for gaming in windows. I tried it with molex adapters, but that is horrible.
