Put in any DVD - get message "This computer cannot read this dvd". 2.1gHz 20" iMac.

DVD did not even show up on desktop.

I did a start-up pressing the shift key - all extensions off - and the dvd showed up on the screen.

Computer reads osX DVD without trouble.

So this is a software problem.

Only thing that ever happened: Twice the superdrive got stuck while importing a CD, it made a lot of noise from the drive, and I could only stop that limbo by force quit (one of these force quits destroyed my iTunes playlist).

So I wonder what I could do. I am somewhat reluctant to do an archive install.

It's very unlikely that this is a software problem. Make sure the DVD is clean and not scratched. Does the DVD work in other DVD drives? If the problem persists, try and clean your DVD drive.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

The DVD is brand new out of the box. It doesn't even know yet what dust or scratches are.

The idea it was a software problem was not mine, but the Mac service guy's.

MacMall, where I bought my iMac, also has an apple certified repair center.

The strange thing is, that when booted without extensions (holding the shift key) the DVD appears on the desktop.

PS:

How do you clean a superdrive? Mine is actually only seven months old, and has only burned three dvds and 50 CDs.

The exact text of the message I get:

"The disc you inserted was not readable by this computer"

Only options are "ignore" and "eject" ( I'd rather have a "shoot and kill" button)

I repaired permissions.

No effect.

It still does not work.

If you google it, there are many people who are having this problem, but no one found a solution.

I THINK I MESSED UP MY SYSTEM WITH THAT 10.4.8 UPGRADE, WHICH WAS FAULTY.

PROBLEM SOLVED.

Finally got a service technician who knew what he was doing.

Within a minute he could tell me my drive was bad, and he ordered a new one.

He had not been in when I first came with my iMac, and one of the other technician saw a software problem, and sent me on a many hour long goose chase.

So if you get "The disc you entered cannot be read by this computer": your drive is dead.
