I've just brought an iMac 24 inch few days ago. This computer is almost at the top of the range configuration, I have 2.33GHZ core 2 Duo, 1 GB ram, 500GB hard drive, and 256MB video card so on. However, it crashed at least 10 times in one day. I was really amazed with it, as a die hard Mac user, I am also a light user in the respect that I don't use it to do any graphic design, or music or anything really serve the purpose of the Mac. I don't even play games. I really only used the Mac for some of the simple things out there, yet these crash occurred. I really believe I have experienced less the 10 crashed on my old iMac in the past 3 years. By the way, I meant crash as the application just stopped moving and there is no reaction on that application. reliable operating system was something I felt only Mac have and I am willing to pay extra dollar for.

I don't felt Mac have such low quality, could this just be some isolated problem? Should I take my computer back to the service center to get it checked out? From the experience I have with the iBook my girl friend use, apple service can solve any problem. I am just not sure if this is a hard ware or software problem. I am not in the position to call my self an experienced Mac user, but I have used it over the past 3-4 years. I might know bit more on Mac then PC.

Please give some advice.
P.S, windows media player cannot be used on the intel version Macs right?
Cheers
Nathan

I have no idea how/why apps have beachballed 10 times. but you might have faulty RAM. Yes WMP will work on intel macs
Signature depreciated.

Is it a certain app every time or just any app? And forget WMP forever, use Flip4Mac. Also check out Perian for other formats.

Yes, the crash randomly occur on all the application include the very basic OS X application. Even the little game of Big Bang Board Games. Very strange. By the way, what is the app of flip4 Mac, how do you use that?

Fip4Mac allows Windows media files to be played in Quicktime and it works great. You can get it here:

Windows Media® Components for QuickTime

This software was purchased by Microsoft several months ago -- it's that good, and it's totally seamless.

It also sounds to me like you have some bad RAM or possibly a bad sector on your HD. I would take it in to your local Apple Store if you can. There's definitely something wrong with it.
