Hi,
Having a problem with the Firewire on my eMac. I tried to upload some music on my iPod using a firewire connection but it didn't mount. I tried to connect my external Hd using the firewire connection but it wouldn't mount. The external HD and the iPod are recognized by the disk utility but the icons don't appear on the desktop and they don't mount. When I put the computer to sleep the external HD goes to sleep and wakes up with the computer so there is still some connection there. P.S. Connected the iPod and used System Profiler. It shows up as a Firewire connected device in "Devices and Volumes".

Any suggestions as to what the problem can be?

You mean they don't show up on the desktop or, for the iPod, doesn't show up in iTunes? Maybe you should try a different Firewire cable. Or try rebooting, resetting the usual (PRAM, PMU) and see what happens.

That's correct. Neither icons for the iPod or the HD show up on the desktop. Also iTunes says there is no iPod connected. Disk Utility recognizes both but says they are not mounted. They also show up as connected to the firewire connection in System Profiler

I've tried the iPod and the external HD on my MacBook with the same cables and everything works so it's not the cables.

Out of curiosity. I hooked up my La Cie DVD/CD burner via the firewire connection and inserted a music CD. The CD mounted and played properly. So it seems the Firewire connection itself works.

My G5 iMac is going into the shop for a logic board relacement because the FW ports aren't working properly...

The symptoms? My two external drives sometimes mount and sometimes do not, the transfer speeds are very slow and the Finder hangs when I try to unmount the drives. The drives work fine with my G4 iBook.

I had exactly the same a few weeks back with my iMac Intel CD. Do you have any anomalous readings in Activity Monitor for the Finder entry?

I used Onyx to flush all the caches and reset the PRAM and the problem appears to have ended but since then I've had weeks of problems with Finder hanging requiring a reboot.

I haven't definitively tracked the cause but I think Quicksilver is involved. As we have different processors I may be way off.

shut down your emac and disconnect the power supply from the wall. wait a few minutes and plug everything back up. sometimes firewire ports need to be "re-set".

Mojo, I hope that's not the problem on my eMac. I haven't had any problems with the Finder so far and the transfer speed on the external HD that mounted, seemed fine. Any ideas how much to replace the motherboard?

Tenex, I haven't reset the PRAM yet but I guess I should try that soon. Hopefully that's the solution I've been looking for. Also using Onyx to flush the caches is worth trying.

gooser, tried that but, unfortunately, it didn't help. .

Also reset the VRAM but no joy there either.

Thank you, everyone, for the suggestions.
