I am pleased to have found this forum and want to say thanks in advance for any help any of you might be able to share. I am a P.C. guy who ended up with my good buddy's "very important" iMac 233 MHz/B to try and fix! I think I am his only hope.....and that's a little scary.
-----------------------------------------
Firstly, I have had the 4 Beep Startups, then the unplugging the power cord, the chiming in, or the

OPTION-APPLE-P-R chiming in......In order to then proceed to
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can't Get iMac 233 MHz/B to Boot to CD-ROM.
----------------------
I am unfamiliar with procedure to ensure that it is trying to boot from CD-ROM.
However, I have tried to boot to
1) iMac Software Restore disc (SSW version 8.5)
2) iMac Software Install disc (SSW version 8.5)
3) OS 9 Factory OS Install
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can't Get iMac 233 MHz/B to Boot to Hard Drive.
----------------------
At the Mac OS Screen "Welcome to Mac OS" comes this Message (with a little Bomb)
"Sorry, a system error has occurred.
unimplemented trap
To temporarily turn off extensions, restart and
hold down the shift key. Restart"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can't Get iMac 233 MHz/B to Boot to Hard Drive Extensions Off.
----------------------
At the Mac OS Screen "Welcome to Mac OS"
At the Mac OS Screen "Starting Up..."
then the progress bar stops approx. 1/8th of the way across.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

any one able to shed some light for me?

sincerely,
eb

To force booting from the CD, hold the letter "C" while it's searching for the drives. I'm interested in the 4 beeps you mentioned, though . Did you mean 4 tones in succession, or just one and then another as it rebooted again (because you held Cmd-opt-P-R)? 4 tones in succession is RAM failure.

OK, I just booted, extensions off, and it made it all the way to an iconless, start-menuless, empty desktop that then had this to display
"Sorry, a system error occured.
"Finder"
error type 10
[Restart] "
If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate any help.

Yes, that's a RAM failure. You will need to replace it. Try pulling one of the DIMMs and see if the problem is still there - if not, try the other one.
