so i have read some stuff on upgrading the card in the imac 24" and it is pretty much possible... except you would probably want someone certified to do it for you... so lets say after a couple of years that the 7600gt starts to show its age... after all, it is a mid-range graphics card compared to other stuff out there.... hypothetically, couldnt you upgrade it to another MXM card, say the 512mb 7900gs series out there? just wondering what everyones thoughts are on this and if there are other cards to substitute instead.

I see three problems:

• AFAIU it's not clear yet if Apple is just using the physical MXM connector and card or if they actually implemented the whole MXM standard. If it's the latter, chances are you will be able to buy other MXM cards to upgrade the 24" iMac.

• OS X drivers. Even if you can swap the card with another MXM card, OS X still has to be able to 'speak' with that card. Either Apple or a third-party have to deliver those drivers.

• Firmware. Just like you can't plop any PC video card into a Mac, the MXM card will probably have some firmware which will have to be compatible with the Mac.

Only if apple writes drivers for the 'newer' card. Until then, no, you can't upgrade. And you don't need a certfiied tech to do it. It's not hard. Open imac. Remove stuff in teh way of the card. Remove card. Install new card. Reassemble. it's not rocket science.
