My iMac G5 1.8 Ghz has since I bought it had a loud fan... meaning: it was constantly on sounding like a small vacum cleaner, and at other times as a huge one...
Never could I sleep with the machine on... even in the other end of the house...

After 6 months I couldn't stand it, and sent if for repair after having researched the net for possible problems. I told the tech guy (swedish) that it was probably the midplane and asked for it to be sent to me, but they wanted it in for repair. (policy: no customers should open the machine)
Got it back 3 weeks later with a fan changed...
Of course noise was still there, although it changed and got worse cause the fan was making an irritating humm now..
So, after 3 months (I needed the imac for work...) I sent it back, stressing the problem with the midplane for the tech guy again (this time a duch one)
Got it back 2 weeks later with the other fan changed...
Guess what? It still made a lot of noise...
4 months later I again had time to call applecare and complain...

They gladly took it back...
Two weeks later I got it back with the motherboard changed!!!
In fact, I thought this was the solution as the mac booted up for the first time without making a noise.. altough, it soon came back to it's usual level.. plus my iTunes songs had to be reactivated....
The norwegian consumer law (same that wants DRM to go away) says that three time's the charm, and you should get a new machine after 3 repairs..

Telling applecare this part was not easy, since the irish rep. I spoke with kept ranting about how long I took before reporting it bla. bla. bla. and thta I should be happy with a 4th repair, this time they were going to fix it for sure!

10 calls later, the last one to the head of apple europe, got me to the end:

Yes, of course I was entiteled a new replacement machine for all this "suffering"-

Two weeks later: I was the proud owner of a iMac intel core 2 duo 2.0 Ghz...

Moral of the story: It pays off to complain...

ps. I can now encode a DVD using iDVD during nighttime, and not be embaressed during daytime visits by friends asking what vacum cleamer that is... Mac??

Congrats! I think a fan problem is one of the most difficult to get resolved through tech support. Its often so hard to make them understand that it is a problem. Anyways, good to hear Apple took care of you, finally.

Good for you

The Intel iMac line is virtually silent. I'm loving it! The only time I hear the fan is when I'm couped up with all the windows closed during winter; even then it's nothing compared to my old PC, just a mild hum.

i think you should start a blog or a website to teach people how to do this! Good job!

Congrats on your new iMac. I really liked playing around with the C2D iMac we had here at work recently. It's a powerful yet very quiet Mac.

Hilsen fra Sveits!
