As the title says, I'm looking for a PCI-Express USB 2.0/FireWire (400 or 800, whatever, I don't care) for my Mac Pro. After plugging in a printer, an External HD (Firewire,) a UPS and Keyboard+mouse, I'm out of USB ports! (well, on the back, at least. I don't like using the ones on the front unless it's only temporary.)

I was hoping for a 3-5 ports USB 2.0 card for my Mac pro, to plug my iPod and various other useless things in. I never put my computer to sleep, so sleep/wake issues are not a big deal for me, although it would be nice if I could get one that dind't have any. Firewire is a plus but not really needed.

Any ideas?

Just buy a powered USB hub instead.

I think the problem with a powered USB hub is it's not quite as elegent/neat as an internal card. On my G4 Sawtooth I just installed an off-the-shelf Belkin card and had USB 2.0. Not sure if the Mac Pro is as particular but I'd like on in my Mac Pro also.

This claims to be G5 and Mac Pro compatible:
USB 2.0/FireWire 800 Combo PCI Express Card (UFC2412) at OWC

This one says it's G5 compatible but does not mention the Mac Pro:
SIIG Two-Port FireWire PCI Express x1 Card NN-E20012-S2 RoHS Compliant 1394a Adapter Texas Instruments

You hit the nail on the head. Besides, what's the point in having that oh-so-expensive computer if you don't use the expandability?

Yes, I've seen these two. The problems are as follows:

The first one is nice, but doesn't provide enough ports, especially at $127.99. The extra Firewire 800 are nice, but I haven't even used the one I have built in on the back of the computer. Why would I want two more? I was hoping for a 3-5 port card, which is something I can't seem to find! You think if they made them for PCI they could make them for PCI-Express...

The second, well, doesn't have any USB ports...

But thanks a lot!

All of your devices are relatively low bandwidth... I'd buy a hub and put the other $100 under your pillow.

I bought both a USB 2.0 and a FW400 from AAXEON Tech and they work great. Here's their link: : : : AAXEON TECHNOLOGIES - PCI Express Cards : : :

You can also pick up a cheap FireWire 800 ---> 400 adapter online, so you can use your FW800 ports for 400 devices.

These are apparently both mac compatible but I have not personally tried them:

Newegg.com - Koutech 5-Port USB 2.0 PCI Express (x1) Card Model PEU520 - Retail
Newegg.com - StarTech USB 2.0 PCI Express Card Model PEX400USB2 - Retail

I'm looking for one as well for my dualcore g5.. but I don't think paying more than $30 is worth it for extra on-board USB which is what I need.

I second the AAexeon products. I have two 4 port USB 2.0 PCIe cards in my MacPro. They work quite well. I wanted to get rid of the hubs.

I picked mine up from OWC, IRC.
