While watching TV the other night (Elgato Hybrid)the computer completely froze (keyboard and mouse ineffective). I eventually switched it off via power switch. on rebooting got question mark
tried rebooting using intall disc (hardware tool didn't report any faults). This also froze with a round circle with a line diagonally across it displayed. When tried open firmware the hard disc displayed when devalias command used but dir hd responds 'can't OPEN the DIR device'

1.5 Mhz G4 with superdrive

any ideas will be gratfully tried, as its out of guarentee and I want to exhaust all options

Thanks

Can you boot it in firewire target mode? if yes, copy crucial files out of it, go into diskutility and try to repair. You could also boot up in single user mode and run a "fsck -fy".

It sounds as if the HD is either bad or going bad. Had you gone in to disk utility at all, can you recall the SMART status of the drive?

The poster above me has it right, booting in to FW target mode and copy out your files. Once you can get in to the system open up disk utility ~/Applications/Utilties/Disk Utilities and check the SMART status of the drive.
