512 M RAM, 10.3.9, 160G HD, Cinema Display.

refused to wake up, shutdown manually, will chime, blank screen, racing fans after ~40 seconds. will not boot to superdrive, safe mode, open firmware, single user. will not reset pram.

reset pmu, reseated ram, reseated video. no change.

removed ram, no beeps. only singly flashing power switch led.

with hd, superdrive and video card removed, same symptoms.

any clues out there?

Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2

That link shows that 1 beep/flash means that no RAM is installed.

I'd try getting hold of some other RAM to try.

finally spent money for diagnosis.

the problem is the video card. still no clue as to how to determine this. any advice out there on a suitable replacement less expensive than apple's $280 solution?

thanks to all for the replies and advice!

look for same video card GeForce FX 5200 - it's very cheap - many people upgraded from this original 64mb card to bigger and modern video cards.
Also - get more memory.
good luck.
