If I wanted to play HD-DVD's on my Mac Pro, i'd need to upgrade my Display, Video Card, and Optical Drive. My question is, is this possible at this point? Could I get a setup working with a Dell HDCP display, the 8800GTX card, and a HD-DVD burner?

Is it possible to buy an HD-DVD burner for computers yet?

Thanks.

There are HD-DVD burners, and I think Toast 8 supports them. As for playing HD-DVD movies, I don't know if any software supports that yet.

The main issue at this point is lack of software for HD DVD playback on Macs, unless you're just talking about Apple's particular flavour of HD DVD.

What do you mean "Apple's particular flavour"?

Can you show me a link to buy an HD-DVD burner?

HD-DVD's don't implement HDCP right now iirc. That says nothing about the future...

oh.. so I wouldn't even need a new video card or display yet..., just an HD-DVD burner. Wow, that's awesome!

Where can I get the best HD-DVD burner?

I haven't seen any HD-DVD burners on the market yet... there are a couple BluRay burners in the $500-1200 range.

HD DVD produced by DVD Studio, which the included DVD Player plays just fine.

Yes they do - if you mean the players - but the discs don't require it. There is a provision in the standard to degrade video quality if HDCP isn't present, but currently no discs on sale set that flag.

For HDCP to work, the entire chain of optical drive - video card - display must support it, and the image can be degraded if one part of the chain does meet the reqs. Right now there are lots of older HD TVs that don't support HDCP and the HD/BD pickup is very slow, so don't look for anyone implementing that flag any time soon - they'd piss off too many customers.

Right, that's what I meant when I said HD-DVD's don't implement HDCP yet.

HD-DVD's will never "implement" HDCP. Movie companies will flip the ICT bit, which will require HDCP to play non-degraded content.

Also, only the video card (+ drivers) and monitor need to support HDCP. There is no HDCP for the optical drive, since the bitstream from the optical drive is still encrypted with AACS.

I assume that Leopard will support HD video... I can't wait, but I'll probably need to upgrade everything to get it to work. Oh well...

Man.. early adopting really sucks.

If I just keep my current system, let it age, and in 3 years sell it and buy the top of the line desktop then, i'll not only avoid the hassles of buying expensive upgrades along the way, but when I do get a new system it'll be completely settled in the new technology.

It'll have like a 16x HD-DVD burner in it, and everything will be completely native for that. Every movie that exists will be on HD-DVD.

I think I prefer to do that.
