I have just bought a new iMac 24 with the 7600 card from Apple Store on line. I am very happy with the computer but since I turned it on I noticed a disturbing noise coming from the iMac. It is a low intensity noise but in a quiet room you can tell its is there. Problem is that I have discovered that the noise is coming from the screen. When the screen goes off (energy saver) the noise disappears and the iMac is almost quiet.

Is this normal?. I recall the iMac in a local store being very quiet (as mine without the screen hum noise).

What should I do?. Return the computer for a replacement?. I am with the 14 days to return tie iMac to Apple. It is a pain to wait for three weeks to get a replacement so I would like to know your experience with iMacs 24. Are they quiet?. Can you notice any noise coming from the screen (wait till it goes off with the energy saver to notice it)?.

Thank you for your comments.

That also came as an unpleasant surprise for me (las year). I still don't like it, but I can't afford to buy another model right away. The problem is mild when you have only one or two applications open. It gets crazy when you get more, to the point that I can't hear my wife talking to me from the other room because the humming becomes too loud. It gets particularly bad when I open web pages that have lots of animations. Close the page and the sound goes down. Better yet, close most applications and keep open only the ones you need and it is bearable. This is definitely a bad mark on Apple's otherwise pristine reputation for producing a rather extraordinary computer. The iBooks also produces a humming, but it is so much softer than the iMac the two don't even compare.

Wow... thats really loud.
I have the same problem on my 24" iMac, I think all the current iMacs have that problem. But I just keep my brightness maximum so I don't hear any hum noise when I am actively using my mac.
The only time I hear that sound is when the mac reduces brightness when not being used... right before it goes to sleep... I attempted to fix this by un-checking "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep" in the Energy Saver options but it does not seem to work. The brightness still reduces on its own and makes the noise.

I returned my 20" for a similar issue. The ads rave about how quiet they are. I tried everything the applecare wizards could dream up.

My 24" iMac is almost totally silent. When it gets warm I can hear a fan kick on, but its so quiet I pretty much need everything turned off around me to hear it.

I am a new user of Apple products and just purchased a 24" iMac. It's just started making the same noise, but only when the screen dims. Did Apple send you a new machine?

I called Apple Support and the product specialist walked me through a couple of things (reset power manager, etc). This didn't make any difference in the hum, so Apple is going to send me a new unit. I should be happier, but this is the second iMac I have been sent. The first one had a bad optical disk drive.

Intel iMac 20": no to very little noise ever -even with all 3 fans running.

-send these units back = more refurbs at great prices for others. =You are helping others by sending the computers back.

It is Apple's job to make great computers -keep the pressure on them please.

I have the exact same, disturbing hum.

Impossibly to work longer on this machine without music on.

How did you guys resolve the issue?
