Sometimes my 20" iMac's base makes this cracking sound as if it's suffering under it's own weight... Does anybody else have this ?

Yes.

It's like a loud, sudden "pop" .. totally random. I always took it as something heat-related. It's startling, but I've never been alarmed by it.

Weird, I would be alarmed too if that happened. I would think its worth asking an Apple rep about, since it certainly isn't normal. And you don't want that coming back to haunt you if/when your warranty runs out.

I suggest going to your local Apple Store, finding a certified Apple Genius, walking up to him and cracking him on the head. Then say "that's what my iMac sounds like sometimes, whats up with that?"

I bet he helps ya out.

...I'd probably be alarmed by it.

I've got one of the early g5s (pre isight) and aside from my hard drive going on me I haven't had the slightest problem. The foot seems more than strong enough to hold it's weight.

I'm not really alarmed by it, it's not like the foot is going to fall off or anything. It's probably the plastic or some component inside that expands/contracts because of the heat ? The pop mostly occurs after putting it to sleep after a full day of being on. I always hear it because my iMac is in my bedroom and I can sometimes hear it crack when I'm in bed.

FWIW, my old CRT monitor used to pop/crack. Usually after I turned it off after being on for a long time. I assume its what Goldfinger said, and was plastic expanding/contracting.

Bingo. It's the same as the 'ticking' you hear after you turn your car off... the engine is cooling off, and different parts cool at different rates, thus the ticking, popping, clicking noises. Don't worry about it.

Mine makes little popping noises all the time. Mostly after it's been running all day and goes to sleep or has been in the cold basement all day and gets warm, like what Rob said.
