My old 700 mhz (slot load) iMac went to sleep today and won't wake up. Disconected the power, reconnected and I get absolutely nothing when I push the start button. I don't depend on the old thing but if it's an inexpensive fix, It does fill a convenient role in my office. Any ideas?

Could be a dead battery, it's about that time for the battery to die given the age of the machine. Try buying a new clock battery for it. I don't have the specifics on the kind of battery, but if you open up the back door and look inside, you'll see a battery up inside the iMac. Take it out of the computer, take it to Radio Shack, and they can get you a new one.

Interesting idea about the PRAM battery. However, when I replaced my G3 400's HDD, I also took out the original dead PRAM battery with the intention of replacing it later. I eventually got a replacement, but I have still haven't installed it. My machine continues to start up fine. Based on my experience, I'm guessing the PRAM battery is not to blame.

Could be. At work when our iMac's pram battery's die, they usually just loose the date. However, I've had personal machines do a lot of funky things when their pram batteries die. And pram batteries are so cheap it's at least worth a try.

The fact that it died mid-sleep makes me think it's not the power supply. If it was the power supply, it simply would have shut off, not frozen during sleep.

I've seen machines refuse to turn on if the PRAM battery was dead, so it's definitely something worth looking at.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I think you mean the 4400/7220 and other Tanzania-based clones. Heard those won't start if the PRAM battery is dead.

I put in a new ($15.00 WOW) 1/2AA batt. and it still won't fire up. Also, I was busy elsewhere when it either died or died while sleeping. So, I don't exactly know if it took a giant gasp or simply smiled and closed it's eyes.
