So lately my iMac has been sluggish. I check hte activity monitor, and the cpu usage by the 'system' is running at like 30-50% on both processors, however, I can't 'quit' this process. Any ideas? I've tried logging out and logging back in, which fixes the problem for a little while....

Have you tried logging in as another user to see if you get the same problem?

Just looking at the activity monitor on my machine and i don't have any process names called just 'system' - I've got 'System Events' and SystemUIServer' and neither have flicked a 0.01% in the last 10mins.

Does it force quit?
