It could mean a lot things, from a minor problem with a system file to a completely fried hard drive to even worse. Will the machine boot from an original System Installer CD? Or TechTools, Disk Warrior, Norton?

The folder icon on boot means the machine could not find a valid system folder to boot from. While this could mean hardware problems with the HD, it almost always means format problems. Files missing, boot partition erased, directory tree corruption.
You'd need a PPC Linux boot CD. It would be better to lay hands on a Mac retail Install CD, since you'll end up needing one anyway to fix this. Either to put a fresh install on the current HD, or to bring a new HD up to speed.

Thanx for the tips!! But I'm not sure why I would need the original Mac CD tho? I'm not looking to rescue the system but rather want to wipe the drive and start with a fresh Linux install.. i'm quite familiar with linux and Im sure it will take care of the boot sectors/partitions etc. on the HD provided the HD is in good shape .. Unless there is something especially unique to G3's please Do fill me in..

You would only need the install CD if you wanted to try to repair the drive or reinstall the system. If you are going to install Linux, then fire away! You will find out soon enough if the drive is toast because you will have to reformat. Generally, if the drive is damaged, the reformat process will fail. Best of luck!

Sherman Homan is correct. I assumed you wanted to end up with a MacOS system, and intended the Linux CD for diagnostics. If your intention is to end up with Linux, then you shouldn't need any kind of MacOS disk.
You'll still need a PPC Linux disk. A standard x86 Linux install CD won't work on a G3.
