What does the programmer's button on my Power Mac G4 DA do? I've pressed it but it didn't seem to do anything. I'm running OS X Tiger if that matters.

In the olden days programmers used it for... programming things. Under OS X I don't think it does anything. You still use it for firmware updates.

Debugger access under OS 9. If Macsbugs was installed, you were sent there. If not, you got sent to a sort of mini-debugger where you could give basic commands straight to the CPU.

As others have said it was mainly for the use of programmers. On my current Sawtooth G4 tower I've found it handy for rebooting the computer when it would fail to go to sleep properly. It hasn't done so lately but I'm still glad to have it should the need arise.

Are you sure that isn't the restart button?

It's used for a variety of things. On the user-end it's only for firmware updates.

As for imitchellg5's inquiry, the restart button is right next to it. The programmers button is indented, so you don't accidentally press it.
