the CD-ROM works, it reads CDs fine, but when I go to the startup disk options, I am unable to set the CD-ROM to boot first. I'd like to upgrade this machine to OS X, but if I cant start from CD, I cant do that. Anyone have a suggestion on what I can do?

Restart with the CD in the drive and hold down the "C" key while it boots.

Tried that too, although I wondered if the fact I have a Compaq USB keyboard instead of an apple board had anything to do with that not working.

Is the OS X CD you're trying to boot from a burnt copy?

Pretty much, if you have burned a copy of OSX any version with an app other than Disk Utility, it will fail. It will still look like a regular install disk on your desktop though.
One suggestion, try out a Firewire Target Disk Mode boot on another mac with a working drive.
It took me quite some time getting my G3 to install from the Tiger cd's.

Also, I dont think that ISO format can be burnt and booted from for macs...

Well....that stinks. I made the backup copies in case anything happened to the master software..oh well.

Thanks for the help, very much appreciated. If anyone else has a suggestion, I'd love to hear it!
